The Coordinamento Associazioni Siciliane (CAS) of New South Wales was founded in order to provide individual Sicilian associations with the opportunity to join into a fellowship with other associations.
The advantage of a fellowship is that it enables individual associations to maintain their independence whilst at the same time it enables the fellowship to organize activities and events which could not be achieved by an association acting alone.
Broadly speaking these activities are focused on developing and enhancing an appreciation of Sicily and the Sicilian culture.
And since the Sicilian emigration to Australia has now reached the third (and in many cases fourth) generations, the activities are targeted more especially to benefit the younger people, many of whom show a great interest in rediscovering their individual roots and the tradition of their forebears.
The ongoing activities of C.A.S. include the organization of trips to Italy and within Australia, student exchange programs, literary competitions, social events and the publication of a bimonthly newsletter “Il Ficodindia“. Those activities are for the benefit of the whole community but mainly to give young people the opportunity to meet, discuss, deliberate, discover and appreciate all things Sicilians.
